Pen Bay Healthcare is an integrated community healthcare system serving the people of midcoast Maine. With facilities throughout Knox, Waldo, and Lincoln Counties, we provide comprehensive healthcare services for the people in our communities, throughout their lives. With a rich history that dates back to the very early 1900’s, our family of providers now includes:

  • Pen Bay Medical Center – a 109-bed, full-service community hospital overlooking beautiful Penobscot Bay in Rockport.
  • Pen Bay Physicians & Associates – a multi-specialty physician group practice dedicated to ensuring that the healthcare needs of the residents and visitors of midcoast Maine are met.
  • Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care & Hospice – one of the first home care agencies in the area, we offer a wide range of high-quality home health care, palliative care and hospice services which allows our patients to maintain their health, independence and quality of life while receiving treatment in their homes.
  • The Knox Center for Long-Term Care – an 84-bed long term nursing care and skilled rehabilitation center.
  • The Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill- Midcoast Maine’s premier extended care community for adults 55+, Quarry Hill provides unsurpassed independent, assisted-living, short- and long-term nursing care and specialized memory-loss care.

Community

The goal at Pen Bay Healthcare is to provide the best healthcare to all individuals in the communities we serve. Beyond the acute care services and skilled nursing facilities we offer, we achieve our goal by linking residents to healthcare resources that will help them to live healthier lives and, ultimately, improve the community as a whole.

Our formal Community Health programs reach out to those with chronic medical conditions who need educational services to help them remain active in their communities. Our programs also reach out to those without medical issues, with the goal of helping them stay healthy. We offer classes and events designed to enable individuals to identify health issues, and to adopt activities and make choices that will result in a healthier lifestyle.

While ours is a task that is never done, we strive to end each and every day with a sense of pride in the care we have provided to the community. Some of our programs include:

  • Tobacco Free Hospital – we offer a tobacco-free campus and support tobacco-free lifestyles for our employees, patients and the community
  • Zing! a new coordinated program from PBH to address childhood obesity based on practices proven effective across the U.S
  • Our Picker Family Resource Center promotes building community by providing health resources and support that serve the needs for women and their families throughout their lives
  • A variety of support meetings for community members with chronic diseases as well as their families and caregivers
  • Support and education for new and expectant mothers

Benefits

Pen Bay Healthcare employees are eligible for benefits if they work in a benefitted position of 20 hours or more per week. Benefits are effective on the first day of the month following an employee's first day of employment, with the exception of STD and LTD benefits. These are effective the 1st of the month following 6 months of continuous employment.

  • Medical Insurance: Comprehensive medical plans available. HMO and HSA options available. Coverage is available for individuals, employee and children, employee and spouse/domestic partner and family plans.
  • Dental Insurance: Preventive and diagnostic care charges are paid 100%, not to exceed the Usual and Customary Charge (UCR). Two routine office exams/cleanings are covered in any period of 12 months.
  • Life Insurance: Pen Bay Healthcare pays one time the annual salary rounded to next highest thousand for non-management employees. Pen Bay Healthcare pays two times the annual salary rounded to next highest thousand for management employees. Supplemental insurance is available at employee cost. Life insurance is available to benefited employees on the 1st day of the month following 90 days of employment. Dependent life insurance is also available.
  • Vision Plan: Anthem's Blue View Vision manages our Vision Plan. Both in and out of network benefits are available. Please see the benefits brochure for more information.
  • Short Term Disability: Benefitted employees are eligible for short-term disability after 6 months of continuous service in a benefitted position. Our Short Term Disability program replaces up to 60% of your lost income based on your lost hours if you are unable to work, or can only work on a partial basis, because of a disability that is not work-related.
  • Long Term Disability: Our Long Term Disability program replaces up to 60% of your lost income if you are unable to work, or can only work on a partial basis. The maximum amount you can receive each month is $10,000. LTD benefits kick in after either 180 days or the end of STD benefits - whichever happens later.
  • Spending Accounts: Pen Bay Healthcare has two types of Spending Accounts available for employees. Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSA) are available with the High-Deductible Medical Plan and are interest-earning, pre-tax accounts. Once an employee has money in their HSA, it can be used to pay for healthcare expenses. Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are also available and allow employees to pay certain out-of-pocket medical, dependent care, and transit expenses with money that is taken out of a paycheck on a pre-tax basis.
  • 403(b) Retirement Package: We offer a Partnership Retirement Plan - 403(b) Plan and this is available to all employees. Upon employment, all employees may voluntarily participate in a retirement plan. After two years of service, employees become eligible for employer contribution. Pen Bay Healthcare will automatically contribute 2% of your salary to your retirement plan. If you (the employee) match this 2% contribution, Pen Bay Healthcare will contribute an extra 1/2% of your salary.
  • Generous Paid Time Off: Pen Bay Healthcare has a program that consolidates traditional paid time off benefits (holidays, vacation, sick/personal days) into a single package called Paid Time Off. PTO hours accrue bi-weekly based on hourly status. Accrued hours up to 336 may be carried over to the next calendar year. Year-end cash out options are also available.
  • For exempt and salaried employees, the rate of accrual is also based upon your length of service and the weekly number of hours you are budgeted to work. Please note that your accrual increases at the beginning of your 5th, 10th, and 15th years. Pen Bay Healthcare recognizes the following holidays: New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

  • On-Site Education: Pen Bay Healthcare has an on-site education department that provides inservices, education sessions, and resources to all of our employees. CPR, ACLS, and PALS are just a few clinical courses provided.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: To support its commitment to the personal and professional growth of its employees, Pen Bay Healthcare provides tuition assistance for graduate, undergraduate and advanced certification exam fees. All employees whose status is 20 or more hours per week and have been in continuous employment in a benefitted position for six months or more are eligible to apply for assistance.
  • Prescription Drug Plan: Pen Bay Medical Center has an on-site Pharmacy that is available to all employees and their dependents. If you work off-site, most prescriptions can be sent to your place of work by our courier. All costs are deducted from your paycheck.
  • Child Care Center: Pen Bay Healthcare is committed to assisting parents with both family and work responsibilities through the provision of high-quality, affordable childcare services. The Pen Bay Childcare Center, located on the campus of Pen Bay Medical Center, is licensed by the State of Maine and serves children ages 6 weeks to five years old. The childcare center is a program serving both families employed by Pen Bay Healthcare and those in the wider community. Children may be enrolled on a full or part-time basis and enrollment is made on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to employees of Pen Bay Healthcare.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Pen Bay Healthcare recognizes that a wide range of problems such as financial concerns, family issues, alcoholism, and drug abuse can be detrimental to an employee's performance on the job even though they are not directly associated with an individual's job function. Consequently, we believe it is in the interest of the employees and Pen Bay Healthcare to provide an effective program to assist employees and their families in resolving problems such as these as the need arises. To this end, EAP provides confidential short-term consultation services and referrals to local community treatment sources. All employees are free to use this program and are encouraged to do so.
  • Employee Health: Pen Bay Healthcare maintains an Employee Health for its staff. Employee Health provides pre-placement screening, TB Testing, immunization programs, and Personal Health and wellness programs.
Awards & Accolades

Pen Bay Medical Center was recently named by The Leapfrog Group as a Top Hospital in their annual list, announced on December 4th, 2012. The Leapfrog Group is an independent group that gathers national and publicly reported information on quality measures, resources and efficiency.

This grade is a reflection of our dedication to patient-centered care and represents the hard work of the entire health system to continually meet the highest safety standards."
In addition to the Top Hospital designation, Pen Bay was also honored by the Leapfrog group with a renewed "A" Hospital Safety Score in November. The Safety Score is assigned to U.S. hospitals and are based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents and infections.
Pen Bay Medical Center was selected as a Top Hospital out of nearly 1200 hospitals nationwide participating in The Leapfrog Group's annual survey and is one of two hospitals in Maine to receive this designation.
