About Us

As the largest hospital in northern New England, Maine Medical Center provides care to the people of the greater Portland area, the state of Maine, and even those as far away as Vermont and New Hampshire. Consistently named as one of America’s safest hospitals, we act as a community hospital as well as a premier referral and tertiary care hospital, offering services not available elsewhere in the region. In 2006, we were the first acute care hospital in Maine to be awarded Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

With 637 licensed beds – and over 6,600 talented, compassionate and dedicated employees who embody the best of what Maine has to offer – we provide comprehensive inpatient services in all medical specialties, including cancer care, heart care, neurosurgery, and orthopedics. And, through the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, we offer peace of mind to families searching for the best care – and latest innovations -- for their sick children. Services available on an outpatient basis continue to expand as we focus on making it as easy and convenient as possible for our friends and neighbors to receive the care that they require. Lab, rehabilitation, same-day surgery, cardiac catheterization and many free-standing clinics are available in the Portland area.

Our people are friendly, hard-working and committed – to their patients, to their families and to each other. We’re motivated by our mission to maintain and improve the health of our friends and neighbors in the communities we serve, and believe that our care should be available to all who seek it. In fact, we provide over 23% of all the charity care in the state.

In addition to providing first-rate care to the community, our three-part mission also includes educating tomorrow’s caregivers and researching new ways to provide care. In 2009, in conjunction with Tufts University, we established the MMC-Tufts School of Medicine, which offers a unique and innovative curriculum, exposing students to both rural practices and training in a major tertiary medical center. Designed to meet the needs of an increasing demand for physicians in Maine, the program offers a new model of education. On the research front, the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI) in conjunction with clinical departments are working to discover innovative ways to provide care and bring leading-edge treatments to the people of Maine.

Training & Education

We are committed to educating our community so that we can better serve our community.

Through the development and implementation of in-house and cooperative education programs, Maine Medical Center is training the care-givers of today and tomorrow so that we can better care for our friends and neighbors. Some of these programs include:

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training

Our CNA program was developed in affiliation with Portland Adult Education. Offered on-site three times a year (January, March and September), the 10-week program is a state-approved, 200-hour course which is tuition-free and includes classroom work, skills labs and clinical experiences. While enrolled, students can serve in a paid position as a Nursing Companion, and upon course completion, take the state CNA exam to obtain the state-required CAN certification.

This initiative is a service to our community offering unique opportunities for diverse populations who otherwise might not be able to afford the education. Many CNA graduates are ultimately employed by MMC; however, the program also provides placement for graduates at other facilities in the area.

Each summer, MMC offers the Student Nurse Employment Program (SNEP) to an average of 35 student nurses. This successful program provides career growth opportunities for internal staff as well as engaging students in opportunities that ultimately lead to employment following graduation.
